While mainstream American cinema still treats the subject as taboo – beyond a fleeting sequence in “Eternals,” no one gets down in a Marvel movie - our preeminent cinematic vessel for marginalized perspectives provided some bracing, somber alternatives, often tinged with acid-tongued humor.įrom the moment the hotshot couple at the center of “Fair Play” sneak off to the bathroom for a quickie, only to wind up bathed in period blood, it’s clear that writer-director Chloe Domont isn’t here to sanitize her subject. It was not a new idea there were already other guides for “Negro” and “Colored” travelers, but these had limited circulation and impact. In 1936, Victor Hugo Green began publishing The Negro Motorist Green Book. It was a project, however, that ultimately subverted the Black economy and the Black community. It tells about a subversive project: one that was designed to subvert Jim Crow but also contributed to the subversion of legal segregation and the denial of basic civil rights. It tells the story of Black resistance to White repression, harassment, and tyranny. It is the story of a lost civilization: one that deserves to be lost but never forgotten. This book is about the Green Book: one annual traveler’s guidebook but so much more. ![]() Reading this book made it clear that my ignorance was part of the plan it made me complicit. I was naïve: totally unaware of pervasive racial oppression and an ever-present threat of violence that lay just below the surface, waiting to burst forth against children who didn’t look like me. I grew up in green, suburban neighborhoods running with my friends and blissfully unaware of how my country treated so many who did not enjoy our privileges and freedoms. Things I took for granted were legally denied to Black citizens, but this was not in any way part of my experience. This stubborn fact kept coming back to me as I read this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you don’t know what a "scab script" is, it’s a script that was produced for a Hollywood project during a writer's strike, therefore engaging in union-prohibited work and services. ![]() ![]() If you have any questions, you can contact Julie Fuller, the Young Adult Librarian at Office: 95 Email: forward to seeing you there! My opinion on the incest taboo is that it is something that society has created in order to reduce the prevalence of children born with recessive genetic diseases. I certainly think it’s meant to challenge its readers’ outlook on certain taboos (there’s even a scene in the book where Maya and her friend Francie talk about taboo relationships, and Maya comes to the conclusion that basically nothing is taboo anymore – except what she feels for Lochan), but there’s a lot more between Maya and Lochan than a broken taboo, so let’s talk about that. ![]() I’ve seen a few reviews that criticise Forbidden as being a defence of incest, but I don’t think it is, precisely. (And it’s set in the UK, which I think is important to mention, because the UK age of consent is 16, so they’re both of-age.) So first of all, I should tell you (just in case you haven’t actually read the book) that the focal point of this book is an incestuous relationship between two siblings a brother and sister aged 17 (18 towards the end) and 16, respectively. ![]() ![]() “My weirdness over this book is probably not for the reason you think it is…”įorbidden left me with a lot of mixed feelings, not because I didn’t like the book (because I did), but because I wasn’t entirely comfortable with the way that it addressed certain issues – and, no, I’m not talking about the incest (at least, not for the most part). ![]() ![]() ![]() SugarscapeĪs Teardrop ends you'll be feeling soooo many emotions and counting down the days until the next book.
